Using Wimpy MP3 Player on MySpace

Some folks have had success displaying SWF Flash files that are located on another web server by only using the <embed> portion of the standard SWF HTML code.

However, it appears as though mySpace.com may wish to not have SWF content present on their pages. If you do decided to try and get Wimpy running on a MySpace.com page be sure to adhere to the MySpace.com terms of service.

We have contacted MySpace.com to see what there official policy is on presenting SWF content on their pages, but have not yet heard back from them.

The Problem

The bottom line is that sometimes SWF flash files work on myspace.com and sometimes they don't.

Another issue is that in order for Wimpy to work, a "query string" needs to be sent in to the swf file. A query string can take two forms in the HTML code:
1. wimpy.swf?query=string
2. flashvars="query=string"

As with SWF files on myspace.com, sometimes query strings work with myspace.com and sometimes they do not.

Again, we're not sure what myspace.com's stance is on including SWF files on their servers, there is no clear limitation in their Terms of Service Agreement, so use wimpy on myspace.com at your own risk.

The Solution(s):

The Easy Test

Using this method may or may not work, depending on how myspace.com is feeling on a given day.

1. Install Wimpy on your web server using the standard installation procedure. Click here to review the instructions.

2. On your web site, rename wimpy.swf to wimpy.psd.

3. Next, use the customizer tool to generate the the required HTML code to display wimpy and set the question for "Where SWF " to the URL to your wimpy.psd file.

Once you have the output from the Customizer tool. open the HTML in a text editor and copy the entire <embed> tag.

Example:

The "<embed" opens the tag and the "/> closes the tag. The Customizer tool puts the <embed> tag all on one line... so basically, copy the entire line that starts with <embed

Then paste that code into your myspace.com page in the appropriate place.

NOTE: Since the <embed tag is relatively long, you may have to chop it up into smaller lines, rather than keeping it all on one line. Otherwise, myspace.com has a tendency to truncate lines that are too long, which will break the code.

So the best way to avoid the whole "will it work or will it not" routine is eliminate all the things that may trigger myspace.com to either edit, remove or disable the flash file.

The More Reliable Method

This method basically removes all questionable variables and should work. however, you will need to have a Flash IDE (Adobe Flash MX or similar) in order to use this method.

1. Install Wimpy on your web server using the standard installation procedure. Click here to review the instructions.

2. Download the "Wimpy Loader" from the tools section at wimpyplayer.com. The Wimpy Loader download package contains a detailed "readme.html" file that explains how to use Wimpy Loader. If you are not using Adobe Flash MX or greater (e.g. your using SwishMax), you may want to use the Wimpy Loader AS download package.

3. Once you've got the Wimpy Loader set up running smoothly, rename wimpyLoader.swf (or your flash project name) to wimpyLoader.psd

4. Open the HTML code that you are using to display wimpyLoader.swf and change any references to the "swf" file to use the new "psd" extension.

5. Copy and paste just the <embed> tag into your myspace.com page.
